About the Colors
It is not always easy to categorize flowers by color. Some flowers exhibit a variety of colors from plant to
plant and some flowers have several colors on each flower while others change color as they age. Then there
are the flowers that are a color that seems to fall in between the principle named colors. I have tried to put
flowers in the color group that best fits with the most commonly seen predominate color of the flower (even
though the photo may show a different color). When a decision as to how to classify is not clear I have often
opted to place the plant in the group that is smallest. That is, if the choice is to weather to put a flower
in the white index or the green index I will put it in the green because there are far fewer plants in the
green index and the white index is becoming very large.
Order of Flowers Within Each Color
The flowers within each color group are arranged according to the shape of the flower. Flowers with radial
symmetry are arranged by the number of flower parts (petals
or sepals). Flowers without radial symmetry follow in a
group labeled 'irregular flowers' and finally the last group contains flowers with parts generally to small to
count with the unaided eye or 'parts indistinguishable'.
Large Indexes and Slow Connection Speeds
Each color group index is a separate web page and some colors have a large number of species. Even though the
thumbnail images used are very small files loading the large number of thumbnails in some of the color indexes
may take a great deal of time on slower connections. As the number of species on the site grows the indexes
may need to be further divided. At this point you can take solace in the fact that once your browser caches
the files you should be able to move between the indexes with relative speed.
